The Crusaders (originally known as the Canterbury Crusaders) are a New Zealand Rugby Union team based in Christchurch, New Zealand, and representing the Nelson Bays, Marlborough, Buller, West Coast, Canterbury, Mid Canterbury and South Canterbury unions.
The Crusaders play their home games in the Jade Stadium, 30 Stevens Street, Christchurch. The 36,500 stadium is another that will receive a face lift and increase to 43,000 capacity for the 2011 RWC. Today it is an exciting venue with the crusaders on horseback parading round and the ramparts sending up jets of fire whenever a score is made.
The Crusaders wear a red and black shirt for their home games with the emblem of the crusader brandishing his sword. The shirt has been donned by many of the cream in New Zealand rugby with perhaps the greatest in the modern era being Richie McCaw the awesome open side flanker who also skippered the All Blacks.
Honours of Crusaders
They compete in the Super 14 competition, which they won in its inaugural year having also won five of the 10 years in which it was known as the Super 12 (1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005). In 2002, the Crusaders had a perfect season, winning all 11 games in the main body of the tournament, and then their semi-final and the final.
